The most common question I get asked this time of year is, “Should I get a flu shot?”

My answer: It depends.

‘Depends’ sounds like a cop-out, I get it — but hear me out.

I believe “should I get a flu shot?” is an opportunity to assess your health.

If we dig a little deeper, the question could be “How am I doing in areas of stress, eating well, exercise?” Disclaimer: Super young or aged immune systems or immune-compromised peeps, plus those that would be worried NOT to get a flu shot, makes complete sense. In other words, if you believe you need a flu shot, get one. No one can argue, nor should they if you’re committed to getting a shot or immune compromised. If you know me, you know I’m in full support of choice. Also, if you are either a single parent, or have limited funds, working many jobs, super stressed, not into mindfulness, get a flu shot.

Because, my question to your question is:

“Are you curious about how to participate in your health so the flu shot is truly an option and not a necessity?”

Given that, you know what I’m going to say next. I want your body to work very well so you are in tip-top shape, able to fight off any virus or any ailment like a ninja. But it takes more than my help. It takes you. You have to develop awareness of your body, your stress level and eating habits and an understanding of how your body works. One of the things I’ve been thinking about is what a flu shot does for people that are moderately healthy is to put them to sleep. Well, sort of. What I’m saying is that you can eat moderately well and sleep a little less than usual and keep your high stress level normalized and if you get the shot, you likely won’t get the flu (this might prepare your body for another type of ailment, but that’s another conversation). Awesome, who wouldn’t want that?

This post is for people who are looking for amplifying their immune system naturally against disease.

And, it’s possible to do that with the flu viruses.

Being a medical practitioner of the natural variety, I want the BEST treatment in the MOST natural form possible. A flu shot is introducing a virus to artificially jump start your immune system. And, there is more than one type of virus and the shot doesn’t protect you from all of them. You have an amazing immune system. You are very well-designed to aikido out any pathogen. The caveat is you have to know how to take care of your amazing body and the signals you give when you’re not at your optimal best. There are some generalities for everyone in the Body Mind Manual of Care but you have some very specific Ways of Wellness that are unique to you.

Do you know what they are? Do you implement them?

What happens when you do?

What happens when you don’t?

The flu shot question could be a pause button for reflection. The moment of review on how you care for yourself. You could take this time of year and flip it and use it to launch How I’m Gonna Finally Take Care of My Amazing Self so that you don’t need a flu shot or it doesn’t become an automatic yes without some health-reflection.

I get there is a trust factor. Do you trust your body? I do because it tells me how to treat you in the office and your body tells you all the time how you’re doing. Instant feedback. Always.

Here’s a suggestion. Easy, affordable, low hanging fruit of healthcare science. Getting the right amount of vitamin D has been found to improve the resistance to the flu virus. I offer a very high-grade option. Organic, sustainable farming methods: I’ve walked the farm that it was processed on…let me know if you’d like to pick up yours.

This goes for everyone:

When the flu drama has passed, make a commitment to figure out how to lower stress and eat more in harmony with the season integrated with your lifestyle.

Whatever you believe, you gotta line up with that. When you are open to other options, let’s talk.

And one more thing, double-down on your frequency of hand-washing!
